The Course

The original 2945 foot Fort Walla Walla Disc Golf Course has ten baskets with 20 holes (2 tee pads per basket) and is located on the grounds of an old cavalry fort in a shady, lush setting abundant wildlife. The targets are Innova DISCatcher baskets, and all tees and targets are marked with hole numbers. An additional nine holes with baskets have recently been added north of Garrison Creek and east of the Ft. Walla Walla Amphitheater and in order to get to them you must cross a bridge and follow a path north towards the amphitheater. With the addition of the new nine baskets the course has lengthened in distance considerably from the original design.

The first tee of the original 20 hole course is located just west of the caretaker's house and runs north. Hole two and three are in the eastern meadow area. Hole four runs west along Garrison Creek, and five is a right dogleg around the wetland on the south side of the campground. Hole six runs northeast, while hole seven goes southeast to the right of the first tee. Hole eight is to the east of the entrance road and goes up the hill. Hole nine begins across the entrance road and runs west to the grove of locust trees above the BMX track, and hole ten runs perpendicular to it going south to north. Alternate tees are provided for each hole, which are marked one through 20. This is known as the Red course. See News/ Events for more course information.

How do I get there?

Take Highway 12 East of the Tri-Cities area going towards Lewiston.

To reach the course, go to the intersection of the Dalles Military Road/ Plaza Way with Highway 125 (Ninth Street) as the highway leaves Walla Walla to the south towards Pendleton. Turn west onto Dalles Military Road; after approximately a mile turn north into Fort Walla Walla Park before you reach the traffic light (Myra Rd). The course sign is at the bottom of the hill next to the old campground. Available on the course sign are flyers about the club & disc golf, as well as maps & score cards.

Disc Golf

Disc golf rules are similar to traditional ball golf and can be downloaded from the Professional Disc Golf Association's website, www.pdga.com (official rule books are available from the club for $2.00 each). Instead of balls struck with clubs, players throw discs from designated tees on established holes until they reach the target. Disc golf is a growing sport that was included for the first time in the 2001 World Games which took place in Akita, Japan.

Course History

Walla Walla won the World's Biggest Disc Golf Weekend competition held May 5-6, 2001. Over 100 disc golf players registered and participated that weekend at the Fort Walla Walla Park course, which was the Eastern Washington site for the competition.

Since then the course has gone through several stages of development, first with pole targets donated by Emory Stubblefield Company, then gong targets donated by the Tri-City Disc Golf Club and tee markers donated by Koncrete Industries. Finally, in addition to the four baskets awarded our course as the winner of the World’s Greatest Disc Golf Weekend competition, the Community Recreation Coalition received a grant from the George T. Welch Trust for six more baskets and arranged with the City of Walla Walla for ongoing use of the site. With the help of Adams Tractor Company which donated the use of a tractor and auger, as well as volunteer labor, we were able to install ten baskets, a course sign, concrete tee pads, and are now completing similar installations on our nine new holes.
